Northern Athletics Senior T&F League (Div 4E) @ Churchill Playing Fields

Open to all senior and vet athletes – we need as many events to be covered as possible, so please consider having a go at a discipline that you may not be 100% comfortable with, but which will help us score points and hopefully get back up to division 3 for next season. A series of six matches will take place over the season – the first five are at Monkton Stadium and the last one at Gateshead Stadium. Click here to download the full season’s program. Please read the rules (shown in the program) and take note that you must keep your number for the whole season (Replacement numbers will be £3)

Durham City Harriers Summer Cross Country Relays

Durham City Harriers Summer Cross Country Relays @ Durham | England | United Kingdom
This is one of two open events that Durham City Harriers hosts each year, the other being the Cathedral Relays in January. The Summer Relays is a cross country relays event that takes place each year on a weekday evening either before or after the August Bank Holiday. Each team is made up of three athletes who each run two laps of a fast, largely flat, grass course. There are races for Seniors, Veterans, Mixed Teams and Unattached Teams. A new junior relay event will be included in the schedule this year, giving 14-16 year olds a chance to take part.

As usual, Birtley AC will cover the cost of this event for our participating athletes – there will be a sign up sheet on the noticeboard at the club, courtesy of Shannel, or you can email me at birtleyribbons@gmail.com if you aren’t likely to be at club for a while.

This is a short and fast race, the first cross-country of the season and a great little leg stretch for the Harrier league! There will be an entry list on the noticeboard, or if you can’t make it to the club but would like to enter you can email me at the address given above or enter online at Sportsoft. The first Harrier league match of the season takes place at Wrekenton, on the fields just behind Cardinal Hume School. There is ample parking available in the school car-park, with access off Old Durham Road. Parking will also be available in the QE Park and Ride carpark which is just across the road from the school. The fields are accessed via a footpath which is situated on the far side of the stone cottages, to the right of the school (it should be well signposted on the day).

  • These times are APPROXIMATE – at all times pay attention for the Starter’s whistles for call up to your particular event.
Don’t forget to bring your Birtley vest, spikes if you have them, safety pins, a bag for your muddy things afterwards, and most important of all,  YOUR NUMBER! This will be your number for the whole Harrier season so please look after it! If this is your first event of the season, you will be given a number by one of our coaches when you arrive, or it will be in the club tent ready for collection – look out for the Birtley flag flying outside! Here is a list of the currently registered Birtley athletes – if you’re not listed but would like to take part, please contact the club using the details given above. Harrier League Match 2, Druridge Bay @ Druridge

The second Harrier league fixture of the season will be held at Druridge Bay Country Park. The course (download a pdf here) is mostly firm grassland, with some track, some soft meadow, and no hills – just inclines. There are miles of lakeside tracks and woodland trails for warming up. Please keep off the course.

Directions

From A1.
  • Join A19 at Seaton Burn interchange. (Signed Tyne Tunnel)
  • Straight ahead at roundabout
  • Travel South to Moor Farm Roundabout
  • Take second exit A189 (Signed Ashington)
  • Travel North on A189 then A1068 (The Coastal Route) to Red Row
  • At Red Row continue on A1068 and Country Park is signposted on right


  • From South via A19.

    At Moore Farm roundabout, take 5th exit A189 (Signposted Ashington). Follow as above.

    PARKING

    Car parking is within the country park using various sites. A charge of £2.00 per vehicle will be collected to cover the fee for holding an event at Druridge Bay, Please follow marshal’s instructions. Be prepared for a walk of over half a mile to the course. It is vital that you car share please – don’t leave home without a full car! More info can be found on the Harrier League blog – please read this as it contains important information about traffic arrangements on the day.

    REGISTRATION

    Race HQ will be at the Visitor Centre. There will be portaloo toilets near the course. A refreshment van will be near the course, plus Hot Hog Heaven! ‘START FITNESS’ will be on site for any last minute purchases. If you have already registered but not run yet, your number will be available at our club tent. You will only need to visit headquarters if you have lost your number and need to buy a new one.

    CLUB TENTS

    There is ample space for club tents alongside the start and finish. You can drop someone off with our tent at the Visitor Centre and then park at one of the sites.

    Don’t forget to bring your Birtley vest, spikes if you have them, safety pins, a bag for your muddy things afterwards, and most important of all,  YOUR NUMBER! If you have already competed in a harrier league event, you will already have number – this will be your number for the whole Harrier season so please look after it! If this is your first event of the season, you will be given a number by one of our coaches when you arrive, or it will be in the club tent ready for collection – look out for the Birtley flag flying outside!

    This is a special match, associated with, but not part of, the harrier league series. Your number will be the number you have used for the harrier league matches – please don’t forget it! The teams with the most points in each age group will win either the Sherman Cup (men) or the Davison Shield (women’s competition), so it’s important to compete if you’re available.
