January 2, 2017
I, David Lamond, have won the Birtley AC allocated number for the 2017 London marathon. After booking hotels and planning a fun packed family weekend in London it suddenly dawned on me I HAVE TO TRAIN FOR THIS, IT’S 26.2 MILE!! I set a date to start training, Boxing Day, 16 weeks before the main event – perfect.
I awoke on day one of training with a pounding headache and a stomach like a washing machine (I have put that down to a bad sprout on my Christmas dinner), but undeterred I made my way to the Shepherd and Shepherdess for a 4.5 run around Beamish Woods. I arrived just in time to see everyone starting the run – I joined the pack, wished a few friendly faces merry Christmas then got stuck in.
I ended up in group of six runners none of which has ran the route before and yes, we got lost. We ended up covering about 5.5 mile a respectable distance for day one. I finished the run (eventually!), wished a few more friendly faces merry Christmas then drove home feeling a lot better than when I started and a sense of determination to get myself together and succeed with the task at hand.
The rest of the week was filled with a fantastic family training day at Silksworth ski slope held by Gary – it did not seem too hard at the time but I can still feel it in my legs a week later; also a beach session held by Tommy, always a good one.
I am currently one week in, still feeling positive and still motivated. I know what I must do and I’m 100% committed and will keep you up to date with my epic journey.
