The fourth Harrier league fixture of the season will be held at Herrington Country Park. A map of the course is shown below, brought to you by the Wearside Athletic Network – there is an inner loop which will enable all of the relevant distance requirements to be provided on the day.
A map plotted by me is also available on Mapometer – this shows approx distance and also elevation/gradient.
Herrington Country Park is easy to access, situated just off the A183 with the entrance being opposite the famous Penshaw Monument. There is a cafe on site and one across the road, so you shouldn’t be short of a cuppa if it’s a cold day! Although there is a reasonable amount of parking, it will still be advisable to carshare wherever possible as league events are always very popular, resulting in parking difficulties at many of our venues.
Club tents will be pitched in the area south-east of the start, while the warm up area is to the north of the finish; as usual, no warming up on the course please.
Car parking will incur a cost of £2, the parking area will be marshalled by the Sunderland Rotarians, and all of the monies collected will go to their charities.
Don’t forget to bring your Birtley vest, spikes if you have them, safety pins, a bag for your muddy things afterwards, and most important of all, YOUR NUMBER! If you have already competed in a harrier league event, you will already have a number – this will be your number for the whole Harrier season so please look after it!
If this is your first event of the season, you will be given a number by one of our coaches when you arrive, or it will be in the club tent ready for collection – look out for the Birtley flag flying outside!
If this is your first cross-country, you will find some useful advice on what to bring, wear etc. here.
Here is a list of the currently registered Birtley athletes – if you’re not listed but would like to take part, please contact the club using the details given above. The list shows your age group and which pack you will be running from – please ensure you start from the correct pack or you may be disqualified.
The timetable is as follows, but remember this is only a guide – please make sure you listen for the referee’s whistle or shout to ensure you don’t miss the start of your race!
