Report by Brian Bailes
Had a great run this morning, there was about 80 people turned up for the traditional Boxing Day run. I have been there now for about 8-10years, never missed one!!! It started after the sad death of Ray Laverick at the Nationals, when Aurora his current club arranged a memorial run, and there were about a dozen people made it that year.
The run has grown each year, organised by Keith Weavers, and although it is a well supported event, it is maybe a bit sad that most of the people there don’t realise WHY they are there !!!
Looking at the positives, there are two Birtley clubs there, who get together and there is a great atmosphere, hugs, hand shakes and banter. A lot of new members that I spoke to came along, and at Christmas we have all age groups and standards running through the woods together, for a run that was meant to be about 5 – 6 miles, but was shortened by some parents who just wanted a trot, and lengthened by some who ‘needed’ more. There were even people out just walking round the woods getting fresh air, working off yesterday’s Christmas pudding.
Whatever you did, it was great to see you all in the pub afterwards, all mixing well AND all the youngsters got a free selection box. It didn’t matter who you were, or how fast you ran, if you took part you got a free raffle ticket (Adriana won first prize) and everyone was friends with everyone else, and everyone had a great afternoon
Thanks for organising the run Keith, and thanks to the Shepherd and Shepherdess for the free buffet…….see you all there next year!!!!
