Hands up all those who enjoyed the presentation night…

Friday 13th, bit of a risk booking a new venue for presentation night, but it was arranged and all things went well. It was good to see Ian Bloomfield, the British Record holder for the marathon (for his age group).

Ian made a short speech telling of how he developed as a runner, taking a few years out in his younger years, and then re-establishing himself in his twenties, an interesting and very motivational speech. His point was that at first he hadn’t taken an opportunity, but the second time round he grasped at the chance and went for it. Encouraging the juniors in particular to take advantage of the good coaching they receive now so they don’t miss their chance or waste an opportunity.

Bill McGurk presented some medals and in a short speech reiterated Ian’s wise words, and paid compliments to Birtley AC, its coaches and aspiring athletes.

There were lots of trophies and medals presented; some by our own Lydia. Lydia also received an award from the club recognising her progress this last year where she has competed for England, and team GB. She has done very well this season and been a great ambassador for the club and to recognise this she was presented with lifetime honorary membership of the club…I believe she is the first at the club to be awarded that on athletic merit.

Generally speaking the night went well, I know I enjoyed it more than usual, the venue was good and the lasses who organised it, decorated the tables with balloons and nicely folded napkins, and the buffet was very well received, probably the only disappointment was the erratic PA system, but that was easily overcome by the speakers raising their voices.

All in all, a good night, hope you all enjoyed it, maybe we could ask the ladies to arrange a Christmas party this year? Been a while since we had one of them eh?? We used to have a do at the Imperial in Low Fell (there are other Chinese restaurants available) on the night of the North Easterns, an adults only and you had to be at the North Easterns to be invited (supporting or Running). Voice your opinion if you think it is a good idea for this year :)

Anyway…well done to Joanne and Alison for the organising!
