Minor Athletes Grand Prix (3)

Another early Sunday morning start. On a bright sunshiny day conditions were near perfect for the third grand prix of the series. Birtley had four girls in the year 5 age group Amelia Bateman, Macey Bradshaw, Sophie Ward and Lea Brown, and a new entrant from Birtley, Molly Elliot, also lined up in the year 3 age group. First over to the long jump where all 4 girls achieved new pb’s and Amelia winning a bronze medal finishing in third place. Straight over to the 75m sprint where three of the girls, Amelia, Sophie and Lea managed to get into the final. No rest and the howler throw was the next event where all 4 girls performed well. Sophie Ward achieved a pb and Amelia Bateman must have had her weetabix this morning throwing really well to win the event gaining a gold medal. Quickly the 4 girls went to the start for the 600m race and in a very strong field  did the club proud – well done to you all. All three girls tried hard in the sprint final with Amelia gaining a bronze, again in a very competitive final. In between events I checked with Molly’s parents and I was told that in her first attempt at the grand prix Molly got gold in the standing long jump, and silver in the howler throw and the sprint – what a fantastic result. We are now at the half way point in the grand prix series go to Gateshead Harriers website for full results and grand prix placings by Carole Ward
