NATIONAL YOUNG ATHLETES LEAGUE meeting 1 MONKTON 8th May

Birtley’s young athletes produced some excellent performances in the first league match of the season. Competing in Division 1 NE against combined teams from Blaydon/Elswick & Alnwick/Blyth we were always goiung to struggle in terms of numbers with more than half of our eligible athletes unavailable for a variety of reasons. This did not deter those present who doubled up on events to ensure that the team amassed sufficient points for second place at the end of the day. Notable performances came from Lydia Turner (G1 1500m) earning her athlete of the match (track). Olivia Bateman (G3 High Jump) also athlete of the match (field) and Grace Turner (G4 Long Jump). A special mentionĀ for the under 17 men (4 x 400) who won the event despite a torrential down pour throughout the race. Solid performances from the rest of the team meant that we can look forward with optimism to the next match, again at Monkton, on the 22nd May when we hope to field a much bigger squad. Full results from the match will appear on the National Young Athletes League website in due course.
