Two Birtley athletes have International Debuts

Birtley coach Tom Millmore has been in the enviable position of having two of his young athletes selected for international competition within a month of each other, Kate Waugh and Sophie Burnett. This is a fantastic achievement for any coach, but for a small club like Birtley it is really impressive, and shows the quality of the coaching and the club’s ability to nurture young talent.

Kate Waugh was selected to represent England Athletics on the 24th January at an international cross country event (Elgoibar) in Spain. She competed in the U20 age group despite still being an U17. This came as a boost for her as she was selected as reserve for the GB team at the recent Great Edinburgh XC (a good achievement in itself) and was slightly disappointed not to get a race.

On the day, Kate raced really well, and was unlucky to just miss out on the medal positions. A few words from Kate herself:-

Finished 4th!! Really really pleased! Bit gutted to have just missed out on a medal but I wasn’t expecting to come up that highly anyway! Very hot conditions meant I suffered slightly towards the end but nonetheless very happy and a great experience!

Well done Kate on your first (but undoubtedly not your last) international race!

In February, Sophie Burnett was selected to represent England Athletics at an international cross country event in Belgium on Sunday 14th February. Sophie has put together some good races recently which has brought her to the attention of the England Team Selectors, but was still surprised to receive the phone call. The event is part of the Lotto Cross Cup series and at the town of Rotselaar near Brussels. Still a first year U20 athlete and with a further two years in the age group, she was racing athletes over 2 years her senior. She did well and, like Kate, was unlucky to just miss out on a medal position, finishing in 4th place.
