The Bupa Great Edinburgh Cross Country took place on a chilly, crisp and sunny afternoon today, and what a thrilling event it was! In an exciting series of races, the highlight for Birtley AC was watching our very own Lydia Turner take on a top class selection of athletes, in a Junior Women’s competition which pitted Team GB against Team Euro and Team US.
Lydia in action
Despite strong opposition, Lydia and team-mate Bobby Clay led the field for almost the entire race, over an undulating and twisting course that provided a bit more of a challenge than the recent Euro Cross Championships in Belgrade. When faced with Holyrood Park, the setting for a true cross-country course, Lydia showed her mettle, and was only overtaken by Bobby’s sister Alex in the closing stages of the race, finishing a mere 6 seconds shy of second place.

The success of both the Junior and Senior Women in the competition resulted in an overall win for Team GB, despite starting off the day in third place after the first race. Results for Lydia’s race can be viewed here
