Euro selected Birtley AC athlete Lydia Turner is on her way to Belgrade today, accompanied by her coach Tom Millmore and her mum Julie. The Euro Cross Challenge competition takes place on Sunday 8th December, so Lydia and the rest of the GB squad are giving themselves a couple of days to acclimatise to the local conditions (although given the weather we are currently experiencing, it may well be warmer and less windy over there!)
Before they left for Serbia, Tom Millmore expressed his gratitude to the club for the help and support he has received, and his hope that Lydia will return with a team medal. This would be an great accomplishment for any athlete, but as an under 17 in a predominantly under 20 squad, it’s an even bigger achievement, and one which will have all of us rooting for her on Sunday. Lydia herself is very modest about her Euro qualification, and accepted the numerous good luck wishes from her club mates rather shyly, although she did confess to being quite excited about the prospect of the upcoming competition.
The match will be streamed live online from 8.40am (Lydia’s race is at 9am GMT, 10am local time), with highlights being shown on BBC2 from lunchtime (and maybe via red button?) – don’t miss what is sure to be a class performance from a young athlete who is at the top of her game.
