Lydia Turner wins GOLD with Team GB & NI!

What a fantastic day for Lydia Turner and Birtley AC!

Lydia began the race, which had a field of just over a hundred girls, in fine form and quickly worked through the ranks to take up sixth place after the first short lap, looking strong and confident in her run.

The race took place on a flat, twisting course with one small obstacle to overcome, which only served to break up stride patterns and didn’t present a serious challenge to any of the runners.

Lydia performed magnificently, and was still up with the top runners after the first two kilometres. However, the quality of the girls she was racing against was evident, and perhaps their added age and experience came into play, with Lydia slipping back slightly by the end of the first big lap.

Emelia Gorecka proved to be a very worthy opponent, and after a strong second lap crossed the line with a huge 10s gap between her and second placed Ennaoui. Mismas gained the bronze position, with Lydia coming in to take a fantastic thirteenth place, only 17 seconds behind Mismas.

Lydia was fifth counter for Team GB&NI, and their combined performances guaranteed them the gold medal place – and what a medal! Sweden took the silver medal, whilst Germany came in a worthy third place.

After the individual medals were presented, the team medal ceremony took place, with Lydia taking the rostrum alongside her fellow team GB&NI athletes and accepting her gold medal while her mum (and coach Tommy Millmore) looked proudly on!

I’m sure that watching Lydia standing on the podium while the National Anthem played and the British flag flew overhead was an emotional experience both for the athlete and her friends and family – well done Lydia!

Her coach, Tom Millmore, had this to say after the match:-

What a great weekend! Lydia has really gained from the experience and it’s great to come away with a team gold medal. She says that she’s grateful to have been given the opportunity to represent her Country and thanks for the support and well wishes from everyone. Next thing she said was that she’s looking forward to next weekend and being able to race in the North East Champs.

I’d like to thank the Club and Hays Travel again for the support we’ve received.

He finished by saying he’d taken lots of great pictures, and they will be up on this website as soon as they’re available.

Oh, and Birtley AC even managed to get a mention on the official blog of the day! blog post

Many thanks to Eurovision (Digotel Live) for their live streamed coverage of the event, from which the above screenshots were taken, and the Spar European Cross Country Championships page for a couple of the photos.
