Once again Birtley young athletes conducted themselves impeccably on the long haul trip down to Essex and back on Sat/Sun. A full bus load of athletes, parents and team managers left Birtley teatime Saturday and headed off to our hotel in Peterborough for the overnight stay before heading into Essex Sunday morning.
We were joined this year by athletes from Houghton Harriers and Chester le Street along with Derwentside and Sunderland – this was one of the strongest County teams for a while in the age groups that travelled. Birtley returned with 3 individual medallists along with team winners.
Matty Cleugh (5.08) won gold and was the first Durham National champion of the day along with team gold. Luke Appleby (5.28) Chris Coulson (5.37) and Aidan Hogg (5.42) won team silver.
In the u/11 girls Tess Graham (5.22) won silver, Molly Elliott (5.25) won bronze and both won team gold. Millie Short (5.59) won team silver. u/13 b Louis Gill (8.29). u/13 g Lea Brown (8.44) Macey Bradshaw (10.11) won team silver. u/17 m Sam Proctor 18.20 won team silver.
Thanks to Pam & Steve for helping with the teams and to all of the squad who were a delight to be with throughout the trip.
