Six Birtley AC athletes travelled to Liverpool on Saturday to compete against the best in the UK at the British Athletics Cross Challenge, which was also the trial of the GB Team selection for the European Cross Country Championships in Bulgaria on 14th December.
There’s always a debate regarding traveling to Liverpool the same morning as the race day, the first race they were involved in starts at 12:15pm, which allowing for an over 3 hour travel without stops, and wanting to be there at least an hour before the start, means a journey starting at 7:30am at the latest. Due to a diversion from the A1 near Scotch Corner the journey did take longer than expected, and gave a bit of concern regarding getting there on time, so maybe an overnight stop in future.
This fixture is always well attended and all the Birtley athletes did the Club proud on the day. It’s a long way to go for competition, especially when there is a clash with a local Harrier League fixture, but I believe the experience of the travel and competition against athletes from around the country is well worth it. Although the course appeared to be quite flat, it could be muddy and sticky in places and there were a few twists and turns.
