Lydia Turner travelled to the U20 England Athletics Championship at Bedford on the 21st June. She was ranked 5th in the UK and 4th of the athletes entered. The heats were due to be on the Saturday with the final the following day. While she was warming up for what she thought would be her heat it was announced that the race would be a straight final with 18 athletes.
The first two laps were slow and athletes were being hustled and bustled about, and she even had to check her pace when caught boxed in at the back, to run out into lane four, to be able to move to near the front. The pace picked up over the final 400 and 300 metres with the leading two well clear and the rest trying to catch up. Lydia found a good turn of speed to close the gap slightly and keep away from the rest of the field to finish a very good third place and bronze medalist, with a PB as a bonus.
This was her first track competition as an U20, and she has a couple of years to compete in this age category. (Watch this space…Val)
