English Schools XC Championships

Race Report by Tommy Millmore:-

Very proud of all the Team Birtley athletes competing in the English Schools XC Championships today at Donington Park. Lea Brown had a big step forward racing in the Junior Girls for the first time having been brought in at the last minute from being reserve. She worked her way through the field and was still going strong passing people down the finish straight, and with other Durham athletes behind she really did prove she deserved to be there.

Tom Goulding was the only male representative and was racing in the Senior Boys race, despite suffering from very bad stomach cramps he finished the race, (although very disappointed) when others would probably have stopped. He’s strong enough to bounce back and is looking forward to the track season.

The Intermediate Girls had Kate Waugh, Sophie Burnett, Philippa Chambers, Danielle Elliott, all raced their best on the day, Philippa and Danielle both smiling at the end and very happy with their runs, Sophie B slightly disappointed, but that’s one race in a season where she’s picked up 2 national medals so when she looks back over her achievements, she’ll soon be looking forward again. Kate is at the lower year of the age group and finished a very good 8th place which means she’ll go on to the the Home International next weekend earning her England vest.

The Senior Girls race had Sophie Montgomery, Robyn Waugh and Lydia Turner. Sophie had a good solid run but is happy that the track season is coming up, Robyn improves with every race and today was no exception, another good solid race, finishing well. Lydia had one her best races of the season, she’s lower age group and all the athletes in the top six were internationals, so her 2nd place, against a girl who competed in last years World XC Championships is a great achievement. Well done people.

If you haven’t been to an English Schools National then try and get to one either XC or track, these are massive events and everyone turns out to race.
