With a first place finish for the second year in a row, and two members of the team unchanged from last year’s lineup, the Signal Relays may have felt a little like Groundhog day for Birtley’s senior ladies’ A team. The Signal Relays are the North East road relay championships, hosted by Houghton Harriers.
The team, consisting of Kate Waugh, Philippa Chambers, Katie Gunn and Lydia Turner, proved unbeatable again on the challenging hilly course around Hetton Lyons Country Park. This stands to be corrected, but I believe this is the first time a ladies team has retained the title at the “new” venue for these championships. Also running today and putting in sterling performances were Robyn Waugh, Paige Gillhespy, Anna Fawcett, Amber Leigh for the B team, along with an incomplete C team consisting of Sophie Forster, Danielle Coulson and Lorna Graham.
A senior men’s team performed their best, with Tom Goulding starting them off strongly with the 13th fastest time of the day (11:06). However, Tom was the only youngster running, with the remaining men being *ahem* a little older, and with three of them still on the road to recovery after timeout due to injury, they were never in serious contention for a strong finishing place. They did, however, run with determination and enthusiasm, with strong support from team managers Ed Lown and Adrian Bailes.
