Multiple successes for Birtley athletes!

No match reports available at the time of writing (hint hint) but there were some brilliant results from several recent local races. On Thursday 27th August, a good turnout of junior athletes and some of our more mature members ran at the Watergate multi terrain event at Watergate Park.

In the u11 girls race, Abigail Thwaites was 1st with team mate Amy Drummond finishing in 3rd place. In the u11 boys race, the results mirrored the girls race, with Chris Perkins in 1st place and Cain Mason coming 3rd. The u13 girls had a 3rd place finisher with Scarlett Newby, and Cain Mason was 1st u15 boy. Full details can be seen here.

In the senior race, Tracy Millmore made a very strong comeback to form after taking time out to have her second child, with a first place finish. Stephanie Young also ran strongly, winning a silver medal in her age category. Full results here.

The next event of the weekend was the Tartan Games, held at Gateshead Stadium. There was an amazing turnout of young Birtley athletes, with numerous PBs and medals being won, and they all had a really enjoyable day. Here are some of the athletes who competed:-

The last event (and for those who ran, it was by no means least!) was the Tyndale Jelly Tea 10 mile race. This year, a new course definitely seemed to sort out the men from the boys, and despite the very challenging hill profile, an ever improving Stephanie Young won herself a gold NEMAA medal for finishing first in her age category. Several other Birtley athletes also took part, and rumour has it that it was a “never again” event for most of them!

Finally, just to round the weekend off nicely, Bank Holiday Monday saw lots of Birtley athletes take to the beach at South Shields to take part in a beach session. Despite somewhat miserable and damp conditions, and some tired sore legs afterwards, there was a lot of positive feedback about the session, and it’s hoped that another one will be held around the end of the year.
