There was a little bit of Birtley AC history last weekend. For all the years the Club has existed, there has never been a relay team entered in the National Road Relays, and it’s the Birtley Women who are leading the way. On Saturday 4th October, Lorna Graham (running her first ever national race as a senior), Anna Fawcett, Robyn Waugh and Lydia Turner started the weekend competing against the best in the Country at the National 4 Stage Relays. On Sunday 5th, Amber Leigh, Kate Waugh and Sophie Burnett again were up against the best in their age group in the Under 17 Women National Road Relays.
The senior ladies fought a hard battle; their coach Tommy Millmore later commented:-
“Really proud of these Girls. 34th team out of 60 a really good effort. Lydia 6th fastest overall”
“Feeling really proud two days running. These Girls ran their hearts out today and now ranked 5th in the Country! Well done!…Just checked the results all 3 were top 25 out of 108 and if it had been a straight race they would have had team bronze, great depth of talent.
