October 20, 2014
On Saturday 18th October, twenty-three Birtley athletes travelled to Sheffield for the Northern Athletics Cross Country Relay Championships along with a dozen or so supporters. U13 girls, U13 boys, U15 girls, U17 women, Senior Women and Senior Men. Now that’s a good spread across the age groups, and compared with other Clubs from the region, maybe the biggest number of competitors.
There was more success, from the U17 Women who are now Northern Relay Champions on both road and country, fastest Senior Women’s leg overall (Lydia Turner) and still first year U20 age group. That’s only four of twenty three; the other nineteen were made up of athletes who were prepared to travel and race in incomplete teams to gain experience at a higher level, athletes who had just moved up into U20 age groups and toed the line with Seniors, the first time Birtley had teams in the relays other than U15 girls, two (that’s two) senior women’s teams and athletes competing out of their comfort zone and still giving their best.
Compared with a lot of Clubs in the North or even the North East Birtley AC are a small Club (in number of members). I think Birtley AC are one of the biggest Clubs for progress. Well done everyone, both athletes and supporters. Results for the day can be seen here with a Chronicle write-up on the seniors here.
