The British Cross Challenge took place at Antrim in Northern Ireland last weekend. Birtley athletes competing were Kate Waugh, Danielle Elliott, Sophie Burnett, Philippa Chambers, Robyn Waugh and Tom Goulding.

Kate Waugh beat the girl who was 2nd at Liverpool Cross Challenge and her time would have placed her 2nd overall in the combined U17/U20 race.

Phillippa Chambers took a bad fall just over half way and did well to make up the ground to finish 4th U17 in the British Athletics Challenge, and help the team win gold. Sophie Burnett finished 3rd U17 in her first year’s season as an U17. Tom Goulding ran his first mile in the top six front runners, but suffered stomach pains halfway through the race and fell back to finish in 30th place

The races in Antrim are a good competition for the young athletes, and gives them experience of travelling and competing against other athletes from around the UK and Ireland.
