Saturday October 25th saw Birtley AC athletes take to the fields around Temple Park in South Shields for this year’s Sherman Cup/Davison Shield competition. This race is unique in that although it’s part of the Harrier league series, it’s also a stand-alone event – there are no slow/medium/fast packs, so it’s an experience to toe the line with some of the fastest athletes in the region, including the likes of Aly Dixon and Nick Swinburn (the winners of the senior races).
The weather was kind to us on the day, and although it was pretty windy (especially on the home stretch around the football pitch!) it was also a lovely sunny day, with a dry spell meaning there was very little mud on the course. The full lap consisted of a few hills, none of them huge but some of them challenging, especially for the lucky men who got to run them 3 times! The wind was also an important factor in the race – at times it felt like you were running through treacle, and strangely enough it never seemed to blow from behind!
Birtley were very well represented in the u11 race, with 14 of our athletes giving their all around the course to produce some great performances. The u13 boys and girls had full teams in their races, achieving 7th and 8th places respectively, and the u15 girls put in a strong performance to finish in 3rd place overall.
Due to other racing commitments, there were no senior or u17/20 ladies teams, but the 5 vets who ran on the day showed that age isn’t everything, with a 3rd place team finish (and a battle for 31st/32nd place between Lorna Graham and Ruth Dadswell, with Ruth just edging ahead by 2 seconds!)
Neil Allan ran a strong race to finish in 23rd place, while the vets came an admirable 10th in the team positions (out of 48 clubs).
Congrats to all who ran – we came 4th overall in the Davison Shield, and if we can manage to get out teams in every age group next year I’m sure we can manage a top 3 position!
