It’s two Thursdays in a row that I have had to sneak away from work early, I wish I worked with Ruthy or Joanne, cos then I would have been off work !!
Never mind, I brought Adrian home from work so he could pick up Pricey, who was considering a run, she decided against it but wanted to be chief cheer leader for team YB, so they still came along. Shannel, (later to become Shannul) picked me up and then together we collected Mrs Y and then off we went on the perilous journey to Dunston. In an attempt to avoid the traffic on the bypass, we travelled along the coach road, parallel to the bypass, but seemed to get caught in the middle of a rally X coming the other way!!! Shannel had swapped CDs from last weekend, and we listened to a compilation disc on the way, George Formby, and that great Rocker Lonnie Donnegan, great as we bombed along singing along to the greatest tracks from her youth.
We arrived in one piece, Adrian and Chloe had arrived ahead of us so had collected our numbers; we bumped into Rob Wilson, who was celebrating 44 years on the planet. Then Lee Drummond and wife Kay who were both late entrants, Ped, who was there first, and Dave Cleugh also. Some were missing due to work commitments, it is a shame when work gets in the way of hobbies, isn’t it Joanne!!
It was a muggy day with that awful ‘wet’ drizzle and so by the time I had run a lap with Rob to warm up, my sweatshirt and tracksuit bottoms were quite wet. 🙄 I had a game plan for this race, I wanted to concentrate on maintaining pace and actually race it as opposed to just running, and I think I did ok. Dave, started at the front, as did Stephanie and Shannel, but my tactic was to start from the back, and Rob and Lee started with me. Ped always starts ahead of me, but I didn’t see where Kay went, oh, yeah and Ms Waugh she started on the line, and flew the Birtley flag!!!
I tried to stay with the lads, but Rob was away from the beginning, and Lee just seemed to ease away from me. I was fine on the decline, but the incline isn’t my favourite part of any race. Anyway, I managed to kick for the last 200 and then again for the last 30 to hold off the lad from Sunderland so that felt good.
Generally speaking, I think everyone got what they wanted from the run, maybe not Stephanie, who was disappointed in her time, but shouldn’t have been!! Kay Drummond had enjoyed her run as well, so watch the entries for the next relay race eh? Kay??
So back to race HQ, the pub for presentation, and the Birtley crowd did OK. 👍 We had Rob Wilson first in age group for NEMAA (Masters) but they didn’t sing happy birthday when he went for his medal. Shannel was renamed Shannul by the presenter when she was called up for fastest in age group ladies NEMAA, Stephanie was second in age group of race, and first for NEMAA, I think we had ladies second team as well.
The main prize for the ladies, Kate Waugh. First Lady, and we think maybe top ten in the overall results. My performance?? Great, I didn’t get lapped!
Wasn’t great putting wet tracksuit on though ☔️☔️☔️
Afterwards we all had a quick rehydrate, and the buffet looked nice too, and a bit craic so a pleasant night.
Motivated by the performance on Thursday I took a trip to Chester riverside park run. I knocked almost a minute off Thursday’s time thanks to Ruthy dragging me round, big thank you for that, and Stephanie remotivated herself with a solid run.
Life is good. 😎 YB
