Senior T & F League Match 1

It was, amazingly, a warm and dry day for the first senior T & F league match of the season, which took place at Monkton Stadium last Sunday (May 4th). We have a joint team with South Shields Harriers (SSH), and for this match they provided over 2/3 of the athletes, with almost every athlete performing in multiple events throughout the day.

The match got off to a flying start with victory in the hammer for Paul West (SSH) and Steph Hopkinson (BIR), followed by a winning effort by Chris Warnock (SSH)in the men’s long jump. The 400m hurdles races were won by Chris Warnock and Emily Laws (BIR), the 800m event saw a succession of hard fought second places, then another first in the triple jump for Shields athlete Neil Yorston.

The 100m races showed some great form, and these were followed by Mark Hodgson (SSH) performing his now famous dive during the men’s 3000m steeplechase and still managing a win!

The women’s 1500m was comfortably won by Sophie Burnett (BIR), leaving Alex Snook trailing in her wake by almost 7 seconds, then there were some more close finishes in the 200m races. Finally, following the 5k, there were the relays – a bit of fun(?) at the end of the meet, and the chance to put the final seal on what looked to be a walkover for South Shields/Birtley in the first match of the season. The second of the relays, the mens 4 x 100m, proved to be a thrilling race, with Phil Pitt bringing it home with a storming glory leg.

The following athletes all contributed to make the day a success, and we hope to see even more athletes out for the next match in June.

Phil Pitt, Andrew Baxter, Ashleigh Day, Summer Gatens, Mark Hodgson, Neil Yorston, Suzanne Gutcher, Tom Goulding, Michael Todd, Carly Henderson, Jak Watson, Paul Doxford, Emily Laws, Jamie Graham, Graeme Thorpe, Chris Warnock, Paul West, Steph Hopkinson, Owen McGarrell, Val Baxter, Sophie Burnett, Lorna Graham and Gary Dunlop. Thank you all for some great performances and support.

The next match takes place on June 7th at Monkton – please help us to ensure victory at the next match by competing if you can – even one event might make the difference between success and failure! Supporters are also most welcome :)
