Development – February bulletin

February 25th, 2010

It is a while since I wrote to you concerning our development proposals to build a track and clubhouse on the land adjacent to Lord Lawson School. You may be forgiven for thinking that the development is not going ahead or that we had lost interest, this is not the case and we have been in long, protracted negotiations with Gateshead Council and Pinnacle to agree the lease for the land. At present, we are meeting next week with representatives from the school to agree a revised boundary line change from the original plans, hopefully the board of Governors will sign off the land early March. At the same time the proposals have gone to the Secretary of State for approval, again we are assuming a positive outcome. We are now at a critical stage and it is important that all members “come on board” in the coming months and give what support they can. Birtley AC pride themselves on the support given in the past by it’s members when called upon to do so and hopefully you will all consider ways in which you can help to create better training facilities here in Birtley.

One of the main priorities will be to increase our development fund by way of grants/fundraising activities and we would ask all members if they can make a contribution to the fund by any legal means possible – do you work for an employer who gives grants or can make donations for a raffle? Are you able to organise a fund raising activity – no matter how small? Would you consider buying a bonus ball lottery number on a weekly basis from the club – 50% prize 50% fund – see Margaret Hopkinson. We are planning a number of events in the coming months which require your support: 6th March “Junior Challenge” – indoor sports hall event – we have 200 entries and would appreciate donations for raffle, tombola and food to sell on the day – see notice board or any of the coaches for information

14th May Annual Awards night Catholic Club see Social committee/notice board

June ? Edinburgh – Birtley coastal run see Tommy Millmore

July ? Grand Charity Race night – see Social committee

Sports vouchers from Sainsbury and Tesco – we are logged in to both of these schemes which are operative from now until June – please collect as many as you can when doing your weekly shop. Encourage your family and friends to do the same. Vouchers please to Allison Hopkins. The more vouchers we collect, the more equipment we can get – thus saving the cost. It is intended to hold an open meeting soon for all members and parents of young athlete members to learn more about the proposed development and how you can help make it a reality.
