Chronicle “Wish” tokens are back

October 6th, 2011

Great news for Birtley Athletics Club.
We have again been accepted for the Evening Chronicle make a wish giveaway.
From Thursday 6th October through to January the Evening Chronicle will print tokens in their weekday paper.
The” Wish ’11 cash giveaway” is a pot of £50,000 cash that will be divided by the number of tokens collected.
It’s simple. The more tokens we can collect, the bigger the slice of the £50,000 we get.
Last year we collected 33,523 tokens, giving us extra cash towards our development fund which we aim to build an athletic track at Lord Lawson School with.
So if you buy or know anyone who reads the Chronicle, tear the tokens out and pass them our way.
We are collecting them club nights or through the post to Katy Wilson, 29 Fell Close, Birtley, County Durham, DH3 2LS.
Let’s beat last year’s total.
Thank You

Fund raising efforts from the boot of a car

January 3rd, 2011

If you thought Birtley AC was just about training Tuesday’s and Thursdays with the occasional race then think again. A lot of time and effort goes in behind the scenes by club members aiming to organise and improve the club for you. Birtley AC is run purely on a voluntary base, so you would think there would be very little running costs? Wrong. Costs for equipment, hiring of facilities, transport to races etc go into the thousands annually and the club has to find the money from somewhere. Some comes from annual/nightly subs, grants and fundraising events.

After over two years of hard work from Ed, Vince and Sam the signing of the lease for the land adjacent to Lord Lawson School is immanent. It is now that every penny counts to help the clubs quest for improved training facilities. These facilities will go on to benefit the health of the pupils of Lord Lawson School, Birtley community and the community of Gateshead for years to come.

In the past the club has organised events such as a sponsored balloon race, super market bag packs, unique events like the coast to coast relay and the Edinburgh to Birtley relay. More recently Margaret Hopkinson, Ed Lown, Vince Taylor and Alison Hopkins have given up their Sunday morning lie ins to man a stall at a car boot sale, selling items kindly donated by club members. This has been a great success and another is planned for later in the year.

So how can you help? If you are not already involved any help is appreciated. Help like, donating items or manning a car boot sale, ideas for and supporting future fund raising events, coming along and supporting Birtley AC athletes while competing or competing yourself, writing an article for the website, suggest Birtley AC to friends. The Evening Chronicle make a wish campaign is printing tokens until January the 15th so there’s still time to collect as every token will be exchanged for a slice of £50k. There are many ways to help and if you can think of think of any please tell us. Enthusiasm and passion are invaluable. Giving words of encouragement to an athlete or a thank you to a coach can go a long way.

2011 will be an exciting time for Birtley AC and the local community. The potential can’t be measured and it’s through your help that the roots of Birtley AC will be able to spread allowing our club to grow and strengthen its already respected standing.

Great North Run Officials needed.

August 31st, 2010

Red Arrows over the Tyne Bridge

For over 15 years Birtley AC has supported the Great North Run by providing officials to help with the ushering of over 40,000 people at the finish line at South Shields.

Without the help of volunteers I’m sure our sport would struggle to host such “great” events.

We have again been contacted and have been asked if we can supply 20 eager marshals for this year’s main event being held on Sunday 19 September 2010.

The Great North Run is the biggest and most iconic half marathon in the World and this is your chance to be part of it. Who knows you may spot a celebrity or even get yourself on TV.

If you are interested or would like further information please see Ed Lown on club nights, but hurry because places are limited and going fast.

A charitable feat of endurance

August 26th, 2010

Around May 2011 Andrew Maclean and Darren Hayward are aiming to run a 30 miler a day over 7 days and various terrains, starting with the first at the commando memorial in the highlands, and another leg following some of hadrians wall all unsupported, why you might ask? This will be primarily to help those marines returning from active duty who have been injured or require help with rehabilitation, The marines are currently (2010) at the sharp end in Afghanistan and as you can imagine have been and are going to receive casualties (unfortunately). This in some small way is our way of trying to help, so if you could donate we’re sure there are many marines and affected families who would appreciate all we can give so please dig deep and give a little or a lot (hint hint)

Thanks and  hope it doesnt hurt too much (the run that is) Hmmmm

If you would like to show your support please vist http://www.justgiving.com/AndyMaclean7in7

Thanks again Andy and Darren
