The 2nd Indoor Grand Prix for Under 9, 10 & 11 athletes took place at Monkton on 4th December 2011, with events from 60m through to 600m. Once again the meeting was well attended by Birtley AC athletes. These events are a great starting point for the younger age group Club members and a good introduction to competition and hopefully a long association with athletics. The atmosphere inside the hall is terrific with both athletes and parents cheering for Club members. Well done to all athletes who competed and see you all at the next meetings Sunday 5th February 2012 and Sunday 4th March 2012.

Another sunkissed Sunday morning at Gateshead, suntan lotion at the ready. To kick off the day the four Birtley under 11girls, Amelia Bateman, Sophie Ward, Macey Bradshaw and Lea Brown made their way to the long jump. Another bumper number of entrants yet again meant the girls could only have 2 jumps so the pressure was on. Much improved jumps by all the girls resulted in new pbs for each of them, Amelia winning the event and receiving a gold medal. Well done to you all. Over to the track for the 75m sprint heats, another strong field as always with all four again competing well (at this point can I just say that all 4 are improving month on month and therefore should be anticipating a flurry of pbs). Quickly over to the howler with some excellent throws from the Birtley girls. Amelia had her weetabix and managed a silver medal. The sun continued to shine on costa del Gateshead with a light breeze keeping the girls comfortable whilst running the 600m. They all had excellent runs in a very close race with Lea just missing out on a medal this time – keep plugging away girls. The final of the 75m sprint (a very fast final) ended the day with Amelia running very well. Josh Harvey was the only Birtley boy to compete today and, on his debut against a very competitive under 11 age group, he ran, jumped and threw very well. Well done Josh. In the year three age group Molly Elliott enjoyed a bronze in the standing long jump and a bronze in the 60m sprint and proudly walked around with her medals around her kneck. All that is left to say is… well done to the young members of Birtley AC and a thank you to the coaches for training our young athletes of the future. Hope to see all athletes for the final grand prix in August.

Another Sunday morning early start for three of Birtley’s minor athletes. Conditions were best described as blustery and sunny at times with a strong wind blowing all morning making events difficult for all of the athletes. First it was over to the long jump where Sophie Ward took top honours for Birtley with a new PB. Macey Bradshaw also set a PB with a much improved jump. Finally Lea Brown jumped very well in her first attempt at the event. No rest and straight onto the 75 metres sprint where all three girls ran well in a strong field. The most eventfull event of the day which as usual did not go without problems – I wish the rules were made clear from the start as to how to throw the “howler” so that no one could complain, however Sophie, Macey and Lea all tried hard and are improving, well done girls. Next came the 600m race which is always ran at a fast pace and despite the conditions all three of our girls achieved PB’s. Well done to all three girls, see you at the next meeting and maybe a few more athletes from Birtley may give it a go.
