British Milers club (BMC). Hexham 22/05/2011 Full results

May 22nd, 2011

Four of Birtley middle distance athletes continue showing their early season form all achieving PB’s in the 800m.

Through the track year the BMC organise seeded distance races from 800m to 10k. The races are excellent opportunities for a high standard of competition resulting in PB’s.

Paige Gilhespy, Adrian Bailes, Sophie Forster and Lydia Turner took the journey westwards to Hexham track which was the venue for the first BMC race in our area on Saturday 21 May.

Despite high winds the quartet broke their best times over the two lap race, showing promise at such an early date into the 2011 season.

The next BMC is 1500 metres at Jarrow on Monday 6 June.

One down three to go. Senior Track League 07/05/2011 Middlesbrough

May 9th, 2011

The first of the Senior track leagues took place at Middlesbrough on Saturday 7th of May.

After being promoted last year when we won Division 3, the competition was notably tougher in D2.

Competing against larger clubs of Gateshead, Middlesbrough, York, Durham and North Shields our athletes were not swayed and each gave their best to accumulate valuable points showing great team spirit with our ally’s from South Shields.

Many of our athletes doubled up on events (some even competing a day later in the Junior league and Lampton 5k) making their efforts even more commendable.

We finished 5th place on the day, only 2 points off 6th showing that every position counts.

Notable performances on the day came from Sophie Taylor and Sophie Forster our U17 rising stars competing in their first Senior league. Also a mention to Alex Robson with a welcome return to competition. Bob Jaques acquired some points for Birtley, in an official capacity as a track judge.

Birtley results are as follows

M 800m

5 Neil Alan 2.13.6 (First one for 14 years)

Flurry of PB’s at the first NEAL, Monkton 27/04/11

May 5th, 2011

Wednesday 27th April, two days to the Royal Wedding, but us athletes from Birtley had something else on our minds. Today is the first North East athletics league meeting at Jarrow, and that means for some people the first track meeting of the season.

There had been a meeting two weeks earlier, but that had been missed by some of the junior athletes as it clashed with the mini marathon at London. Incidentally, we have to say well done to Darren Purvis who managed a top 100 placing and knocked 2 ½ minutes off his “London PB” this year.

It was a nice day, but I would possibly say it was a bit warm for the endurance race, which at this meeting was the 1500m, but thankfully by the time the schedule reached that event it was after 8:00 and had fairly cooled down.

These meetings are great, as there is a good level of competition yet everyone is pleasant and sociable, especially amongst the junior athletes as they mix with friends from other clubs from around the area, namely Jarrow, Chester le Street and Blaydon, all really friendly clubs.

I think we were just about the first from our club to arrive….as is Adrian’s want; the only people I saw already there were Ed and ‘Pedro’. Ed coming to support his athletes and ‘Pedro’ had bussed in from Stanley to compete. Anyway, Sophie F travelled with us, and then Paige and Lydia soon followed along with Grace, Then Anna, and when we all gathered together at the 1500 start point, didn’t we just bump into Carol Ward, and Rachel also competing. Chris Peverley turned up just to watch as he has sore feet from the Elswick relays (blisters like you would never believe if you didn’t see for yourself!!).

Tommy arrived in time to see his athletes run, and Mark arrived just in time to see his little brother run. There I think I have mentioned you all, so now for the performances. The first run was Rachel Ward, who did very well in her 300m, I couldn’t see from where I was what position she finished in, but after the race in an interview with her mum, I was told it had been her first ever 300 on a track for the club, and that the learning curve had been very steep. That is always the case for first runs on events, so well done Rachel, you have set the level to compete at, now you have to maintain that standard and try to develop and improve at each event.

The next event was u/15 girlies 1500, featuring Lydia and Anna, and their mate from Blaydon Sophie M. It was good to watch the 3 of them running so well as they finished in 1st 2nd and Sophie in 3rd. I believe the Birtley lasses both pb’d Lydia beating Anna by 2 seconds, but Anna beating her pb by 9 seconds. No room for complaint there then!

Ade just pointed out that the 300’s were run after the 1500’s and before the seeded races for anyone who spotted my error.

The next run was Adrian. Adrian has been struggling for the last two seasons, but seemed to bury all his demons this week, following on from a great run at Elswick where he beat my time by almost 3 minutes, (but I am not upset cos he beat all the other seniors as well). He entered the second of the seeded races, and ran himself from the back into 3rd place, and knocked 14 seconds off his pb. That felt good.
Then Sophie Forster ran in the next seeded race in her first u/17 track event. Sophie ran a strong 1500 in a very tactical race but still managed to pb, Tommys athletes still doing well, with Paige left to run the final seeded race with ‘Pedro’. Paige ran really well to get through her first u/17 track event in a pb time ducking 5minutes for the first time, knocking about 18 seconds off. Pedro says he ran a pb as well cos it was his first ever 1500 on the track. That means that all Tommys group managed to either match or improve their pb’s in the first meeting of the season.

Meanwhile on the finishing straight Gracie was doing the long jump. Now I have to say I didn’t even realise she was there until I saw her as I was leaving. But in a quick interview at the club on Thursday night she did tell me she had done very well, just jumped about 3 inches off her pb, but she said she took off about 4 inches before the board, so technically another pb albeit unofficial!

Also taking too the track was Sophie Taylor running in the 150 sprint and in the sand pit jumping in the long jump. A welcome sight back into competition with she achieved a PB in the 150 and the long jump.

Well done to all competitors, hopefully a few more of yous will come to play at the next one which is Northern Senior league (for Seniors) Sat. 7th May and the young athletes league (U13-U17) at Monkton Sun.8th May.

Senior track league 2011

April 3rd, 2011

Cross country is over and now it’s time to throw, jump and run in the upcoming track season. Once again our senior team will be operating as a composite with South Shields Harriers for the 2011 season.

It is therefore necessary and only fair to give both clubs an idea of athlete availability as soon as possible.

Any senior athlete wishing to participate, please append your name, availability and event choice(s) to the matrix attached to the club notice board or see either Lee Millmore or Margaret Hopkinson.

Saturday, 7 May 2011 Middlesbrough.

Saturday, 4 June 2011 York

Sunday, 3 July 2011 Jarrow

Sunday, 14 August 2011 Whitley Bay

It may be necessary to club resources and hire a bus to travel to the venues at York and Middlesbrough so please inform organisers if travel is required.

Please note: Organising the team, especially as a composite can and will be a difficult and thankless task. The club organisers will try to include as many competitors as possible, so please be flexible and sporting, and remember we are a TEAM!

September 15th, 2010

Adam Ridley, Amelia Bateman and Olivia Bateman

Adam Ridley, Amelia Bateman and Olivia Bateman have jumped, thrown and raced their way to the top of this years Gateshead Grand Prix.

After some brilliant individual performances over six events Adam and Olivia both in the under 12’s and Amelia in the under 10’s were presented with their trophies at Gateshead International Stadium.

Now all they need to worry about is making space on the mantelpiece for their new silverware.

Well done.

Coverage of some of the bank holiday weekends events

August 30th, 2010

The bank holiday weekend was a quiet weekend for athletics. There was competition available, but not many chose to participate.
We had a family day out Thursday, so missed training Thursday evening, but Tommy texted Saturday mornings arrangement. We met at the Riverside and did a 20 minute warm up, with former club members Robbie and Steph, and friend Anna, led by Lee and Tracy.
Tommy was not available for the warm up, as he had Sophie and Sophie at the Town Moor for a park run. Both girls commented later that evening that they had enjoyed taking part in the 5km run, but said it had been very windy. Tommy agreed that it had not been a good day for fast times, but that both lasses had run well.
After the training session Adrian went straight through to Gateshead stadium to watch his mates in the Northern inter-counties competition. Birtley had only the one athlete in this competition, but he had other friends who he had made through the sport that he wanted to watch. As it was, we were 15 minutes late and missed Chelsea Jarvis of Merseyside win her 800 in a time of 2:17….(under 15 girlie). Another friend, Liam Ayton (North East…..Durham athlete) was out sprinted from the last hurdle in the 1500 steeplechase, an event Adrian has always fancied trying.
The highlight of the meeting for Ade was watching club mate Lydia Turner in the 1500m. Lydia’s race was fast from the start, but she showed experience and maturity at her young age and she let the leaders tear off. After 300m the leaders had settled down to a practical pace and Lydia had caught them. At 600m Lydia took the lead and stretched the pack out, only one athlete showing any attempt to stay with Lydia. At the bell Lydia was firmly in control at the front and although the second placed athlete did try to close the gap in the last 100m Lydia finished a comfortable winner in a time of 4:52 (unofficial). In the following race Charmaine Porter was representing the North East, she ran her race with the senior women as there was only 3 competitors in that category. Tommy did observe that it was sad that such an event should have voids where there were no athletes available or selected to represent their region.
Julie was delighted to see that Lydias friends had turned up to support Lydia, Paige Gillespy, Adrian, Pedro and Tommy, cheering from the track side.
Sundays training was missed as there was an event on at Hexham. Tynedale had organised a meeting, with a mile race, Tommy said he loved that one as it was a traditional event. Adrian had wondered between the 800 and the mile. We went to the Wentworth Stadium, unaware that anyone from the club would be there, but when we arrived the Taylors were already there and warming up for competition. This surely must be the last track and field for the season. We saw Vince running himself through two heats towards the final in the 100m this event was a seeded event, as were most of them. Kieran Taylor was taking part in what looked like a “quadrathlon” I am sure Vince can expand with details if anyone is interested for next year. I think it was a 60m sprint, standing long jump, throwing the “howler” and 600m. I couldn’t say how he did overall as we missed the field events, but he ran a very good 4th place in the 600m, against some stiff opposition. Sophie ran against Charmaine Porter, in with all the under17 lads, never seems fair that to me, but…..never mind, mustn’t grumble.
After Sophies 800 was the showpiece event. Unknown to most people the mile race was an elite race. The race record was 3:56 and Adrian and Anna Fawcett entered thinking it was a seeded race………Doh! the first lap was 56seconds (Ades pb for 400 is 62), they went through 800 in 1:58. Ade was smiling all the way, enjoying mixing with this calibre of athlete, although you could hardly say he was mixing with them. The race was won in 4:07 (this was a mile not 1500m). Ades time wasn’t particularly good 5:23, but he was pleased that he didn’t get lapped, and loved the experience. Anna followed Adrian home, but there were still two athletes behind them so they were both smiling at the end. After the race the winners went off to cool down, and didn’t even ask their new friends Adrian and Anna if they wanted to go with them
Just before we left, we saw Sophe Taylor lining up for the 200, I think it was a seeded race, and when she went passed us with 40m to go she looked to be fighting for 1st or 2nd place. (couldn’t see from where we were where she ended up). After her race we said our ta ta’s and left for home. Sorry, we don’t know how Vince finished in his 100m.
