Spofforth Gala Trail Race

I had been camping in nearby Boroughbridge so I thought I would give this race a whirl. Having read a few reviews about this I knew it wouldn’t be P.B. territory but a nice scenic race with a village gala to keep my supporters happy as I ran round. When I got there I asked quite a few other runners about the course but it seemed that everybody was doing this for the first time!! Just before the start we had a safety briefing and the official told us about the hazards, which included pot holes, ploughed fields and bogs. Great !! I was up for this, just like X.C. The only problem was everybody else was wearing trail shoes and I had my old racing flats, “What the hell, it will be a laugh!”. We started promptly and I was soon in no man’s land, ( as usual !! ) negotiating all the above hazards, but having a laugh along the way. Managed to get round in 40:19 and came in 11th position and just missed out on a Vet’s prize, ah well maybe next year I will buy some trail shoes and give this really enjoyable race another go, which was well organised and marshalled.
