On a gloriously sunny day at Pontefract last weekend, Kate Waugh (winner of the Cross Challenge in Cardiff the previous weekend) became Northern XC Silver medalist in her first year as U17, and a gold team medalist along with her team mates Sophie Burnett, Philippa Chambers, Katie Gunn and Amber Leigh.
The U20 Women’s team, consisting of Robyn Waugh, Paige Gilhespy and Anna Fawcett came a very creditable 4th place, and if the team had been 4 to count instead of 3, Sophie Forster’s performance would have taken them into bronze position. Coach Tommy Millmore said:-
This shows what strength the club has, all these girls have competed regularly throughout all the age groups, and are now even being competitive at Senior level. There’s no instant success and there’s still a few years to reach their potential, but with consistent training, some common sense and a bit of work, it can happen. The younger athletes also put in some great performances, with Lola Tindle, Lea Brown, Sophie Bell and Grace Curtis running well in some very muddy conditions. Slightly older, but maybe not wiser, Val Baxter and Shannel Curtis represented the senior ladies, with Shannel in particular putting in a strong performance on a leg sapping course.
