The Durham Summer Relays were held on a balmy evening at the University Racecourse sports fields last Wednesday, and Birtley fielded a fantastic total of 7 senior teams (including two female teams) and 3 junior teams. Results are still pending at the time of writing, but the ladies senior team A appeared to be the winning team (to be confirmed), with some sterling performances from Tracy Millmore, Anna Fawcett and Lydia Turner. The u13 girls team also won first place, with great performances from Sophie Bell, Sophie Ward and Macey Bradshaw
and they all won a lovely souvenir mug to remind them of a fab night of racing The u13 boys and the u15 girls also gave great performances, and coped confidently with the mainly flat, 0.9 mile course, cruising up the short but sharp hill in the centre of the course with seemingly little effort.
The senior team athletes had to run the course twice, and the relatively short distance of the run led to some thrilling high speed performances, after a slightly slow start by some due to the vast numbers of athletes on the start line. The event was certainly well supported by the local clubs, with many of them having multiple team entries, and this led to some interesting changeovers as friendly rivalries kicked in, and many sprint finishes were seen. The large number of teams on the night seemed to have taken the organisers somewhat by surprise, and the senior results were not announced at the time, although the junior prizes (and spot prizes of Durham Breweries beer) were given out at the end of the evening.
Overall this was a lovely event, well attended and run, and we look forward to this becoming a permanent addition to the club’s calendar – thanks to Durham City Harriers for hosting. A link to the results will be posted here once they’re available.
