Gerard (Pedro) Murray – a true legend

Yesterday was a sad day for North East athletics, as one of our most long-standing members, Gerard Murray, popularly known as Pedro, passed away after a short but brave battle with cancer. Gerard showed the same grit and determination in fighting his illness as he did in every race he ran, always giving it his all. What Pedro lacked in stature, he more than made up for in heart and courage, and was always generous in his support of others at the many fixtures he attended – notably cross-country and parkrun, where he regularly gave up his free time to volunteer.

Many in the running community are mourning his loss – a selection of their posts are shown below. If you would like to share a memory of Pedro or pass on your condolences to his family, please post in our comment section below. There is a Just Giving page set up to help his family at this difficult time, here is the link.

Birtley AC would like to pass on our condolences to Gerard’s family and let them know that he will missed but never be forgotten. FB_IMG_1503258134385 FB_IMG_1503258146203 FB_IMG_1503259117316 FB_IMG_1503258287833

Pedro Had two families, his family at home and his running family. He will sorely missed by both. A true competitor and a true family man.

My thoughts are with Pedro's family and friends at this sad time. He really was a legend and a perfect athlete for others of all ages to look up to no matter what their ability. His grit and determination was relentless! Run In Peace Pedros.

Such sad news. He was such a kind man and so supportive of everyone. He was always kind and encouraging to Fynn when ever he saw him. He would always talk with such pride about his family. He will be such a big missed. Our thoughts are with his family.

Totally amazing guy - Gerard (I sometimes called him Barry) He was a team manager's/Parkrun director's dream as he would volunteer to do virtually anything at short notice and come rain or shine always have a smile and have encouraging words to give to anyone feeling down anytime. Our thoughts and love are with your family from South Shields Harriers

[…] Much pouring out of heartfelt tributes to our friend Ped this week who sadly died this week. We are inviting all north east runners to Riverside parkrun on Saturday for a lap of honour in Ped’s name. Please come wearing your 50 T shirt if you have one or your running club vest if you have one. Ped has reached 93 parkruns and 49 at Riverside. Saturday WILL BE his 50th with us. After consulting with his family , our small tribute and celebration on Saturday will go like this. We invite you as a local runner , a parkrunner of many runs or your very first time to come down to Riverside park for the 9am start. You do not need to have known Gerard Murray (Ped) to be welcome on Saturday to the celebration of his life. We will have a minute applause before we set off for Ped – which would embarrass him. We will run parkrun – in your 50th T shirt, in your local running club vest , in any T shirt you want! When the last parkrun participant has competed parkrun on Saturday circa 9:45 we will gather near the cafe and do a single lap of honour at Ped pace – sharing happy stories and a laugh , just as he would want us to, as a celebration of a special person lost to us, thus completing his 50th Riverside parkrun. Please pass this on to running friends in the North East Any messages for his family can be left at the bottom of the post shown here. […]

Just heard the sad news of Gerard passing away. A race, local or further afield, he still finished with a cheeky grin on his face! He was every athlete's friend and will be sorely missed. At this sad time my prayers go out to your family. God Bless you Gerard
