Northern XC Championships 30th January 2016 – Blackburn.
A very big well done to everyone from Team Birtley who raced on what is one of the toughest courses in the country, add to that snow, hail, wind and of course mud, and you’ve got a very big test of fitness and guts. All results are here
There were three medals won. Kate Waugh U17 Women’s Gold (Kate has previously won U13 and U15 Gold).
Sophie Burnett U20 Women’s Bronze (Sophie is a first year U20 and has a further two years in this age group). U20 Women’s Team Gold, Amber Leigh, Danielle Coulson, Sophie Burnett – they also won 1st team at Antrim two weeks ago. All are first year U20s (the future’s bright).
The Club had athletes in all age groups except U17 and U20 Men. Do we need U17 and U20 Men? Yes we do. Where will we get them? Well maybe we’ve already got them, although it’ll take a few years for them to move through the age groups. As I said at the start, to race today took guts although anyone who did it, did not have to do it. The girls who won medals today have competed through the age groups from U13 to U20 and I’m sure they will be racing in the Northerns as Seniors in the future. So, all you U13s U15s, take your time, keep enjoying your sport, move through the age groups, and reach your potential. You may even pick up a medal or two along the way.
Three highlights of today? 1 – A Senior Women’s team. Well done ladies, 18th team from 40, one of them first year senior, the others? “senior” Seniors. 2 – Handing over the U17 Women’s Team trophy from last year and then collecting the U20 Women’s Team trophy this year. 3 – Running around like an idiot watching people race up hills and through mud ( it’s b—-y great). Small Club BIG Depth. The Future’s Bright
