I arrived at Raby Castle nice and early to register Chris for the 5k run. It is about a 15 minute walk from the car park to the start with registration halfway. It was a gorgeous day made even better by the location and views.
We all met up and prepared for the first race which was the 5k. We had four runners competing in this race Michael, Tess, Erin and Chris. Jamie took them for a warm up then we got them to the start line. There was a good mix of club and fun runners of all ages, the hooter sounded and off they went.
They all ran past the midpoint strongly and finished with in the top 25.
8th Michael 22.55
11th Chris 23.43
18th Tess 24.27
25th Erin 24.54
Not bad in a field of 175!
Next was the 10k. With four of us on the start line and three finishing. Before the start of the race I was told about ‘THE HILL’, not quite sure which one they meant as I encountered a few of them made worse by the heat and the fact that you have to do it twice. The first lap was hard and the second didn’t get much better. Overall a hard course but very enjoyable. Would recommend it to anyone of any ability.
19th Shawn Laws 38.44
36th Dave Coulson 40.51
47th Jamie Graham 42.00
There was then the 1.2k for the under 12. This consisted of 7 Birtley runners. 4 new runners and 3 existing. This was a great race as all kids ran the full way without stopping despite a casualty. This shows great hope for the future of the club. Well done to: Lea, Maggie, Daisy, Nell and Kitty. With the support of Lorna and Danielle and maybe next year Harry M will make his debut.
This was topped off with a great picnic with the Graham, Coulson and Millmore families
