The National XC Championships at picturesque Wollaton Park, Nottingham, saw 17 Birtley athletes put in some fantastic performances on a very challenging course.
In what appeared to be a record sized field on the day, our athletes held their own, with some strong performances from our u13 girls Lea Brown, Sophie Bell and Bethan Frazer-Denham, solo u13 boy Louis Gill and u15 girls Kate Waugh and Rhianne Bell. The five senior men Lee Millmore, Peter Gill, Dave Coulson, Dave Cleugh and Pedro performed well in a race consisting of well over 1600 runners, although Dave Cleugh did manage to pick up a knee injury on the way around the course.
However, the stand out performances of the day had to be by the u17 girls, where after a very close and hard fought battle around the course, Lydia Turner produced a thrilling finish and pipped Bobby Clay to the post by 4 seconds, resulting in an individual gold for herself and a team gold with her team-mates Sophie Burnett, Philippa Chambers and Robyn Waugh, with Anna Fawcett and Danielle Elliott also putting in some great performances.
